Fotobug - Episode 135 - Oil on Water Photography

July 26th, 2015

Welcome to The Fotobug podcast number 135!

In recent photographic news, researchers at Columbia University are developing an iOS app that would make it easier for consumers to capture bullet time sequences.  A vast majority of Members of the European Parliament have voted to remove wording from a current copyright reform proposal that may have caused a lot of trouble for photographers. Tangerine, a feature film by Sean Baker, is headed for theaters on July 10th. was shot entirely on the iPhone 5,  It has been reported that Panasonic is developing a technology for refocusing an image after it's been shot, and will be commercializing the feature sometime in the next year.  Watch the entire podcast for these and other stories including a discussion of DSLR vs mirrorless cameras passed to us by our friend, Vincent Versace.

Fred and Jim demonstrate how to capture beautiful abstract images of oil on water.  This is a great way to use your camera even if it is too hot or raining outside.  You just need a few items to capture your own oil on water images:

  • Camera and tripod
  • close-up lens
  • Clear glass dish, glass or jar
  • water with a little dish soap
  • Cooking oil
  • food coloring (optional)
  • Lighting source

Fred and Jim explain and demonstrate the setup in the podcast. Go ahead and give it a try and share your images with us and our listeners on our  Facebook page!
